How to word a Christian wedding invitation
A Christian wedding invitation sets the tone and tells guests whether they are coming to a church ceremony, a full Nuptial Mass, or a garden-chapel service — then to the reception. The wording is traditionally warm and a little formal (“request the honour of your presence”), often with a short scripture line, and it hands guests the church, the time and the reception in one clean itinerary.
What to include
- Both names, and the hosts if the families invite (“Together with their families…”).
- Ceremony vs Nuptial Mass — say which, and the church in full.
- The reception, with its own time and venue.
- An RSVP method and deadline, with a line for meal choice.
- A short reading (1 Corinthians 13, Ecclesiastes 4:12) if you’d like — set small, kept out of the way.
The tradition
A word on register — “honour of your presence” is the church wording; “pleasure of your company” fits the reception or a less formal service.
- Catholic Nuptial Mass — a full Mass; guests may expect an hour-plus.
- Protestant / garden-chapel — a shorter service, often with a unity candle.
- Regional — Kerala Syrian Christian and Goan Catholic weddings carry their own customs and wording.
When to send
- Save the date: six to eight months ahead.
- Full invitation: six to eight weeks before.
