How to word a Nikah / Muslim wedding invitation
A Muslim wedding is usually two events: the Nikah — the marriage contract, with the offer and acceptance and the mahr — and the Walima, the reception feast hosted after. They may fall on the same day or days apart, and are sometimes hosted by different families. The invitation names both clearly, keeps the tone modest, and leaves any sacred verse to be recited rather than printed on a card that will be set down.
What to include
- Both names, and which family hosts the Nikah and which the Walima.
- Nikah date, time and venue, and the Walima separately — same day or another.
- Any Mehndi/Mayun event beforehand, on its own line.
- A modest dress note if your families expect one.
- A reply for each event, so the Walima headcount is real.
The events
- Mehndi / Mayun — the henna celebration before (optional).
- Nikah — the contract, the offer and acceptance, the mahr.
- Walima — the reception feast that announces the marriage.
When to send
- Save the date: four to six months ahead.
- Full invitation: five to eight weeks before.
- Replies about three weeks out, for each event.
