What to include

Assume nobody knows anything about where you now live.

• The full address, and the bits a map will not tell them — which buzzer, which floor, the gate code, the door that actually opens.
• Parking. Street, driveway, permit needed, or the car park round the back. This is the single most useful line you can write.
• Open house or a set time? “Drop in any time between 2 and 6” is a completely different event from “7pm”, and guests plan differently.
• Food and drink. Whether it is nibbles, a full dinner, or bring-a-bottle.
• Gifts. Most people want to bring something — “no gifts, just come” or “plants welcome” saves them worrying.
• Children and pets, if the answer is yes. New homes make people unsure.

When to send

Give yourself breathing room — you will still be unpacking.

• Two to three weeks ahead is plenty for a relaxed housewarming.
• Wait until you are actually settled. A month after moving is far more enjoyable than the first weekend.
• Ask for replies a few days before, so you know how much to buy.

Wording you can borrow

Relaxed. The point is that people see the place.
