• Where to change, and whether there is shade for the children who have had enough sun.
• Food timing, since swimming makes children ravenous at predictable intervals.

When to send

Pool parties are weather-dependent and hugely popular, so give proper notice.

• Three weeks ahead for a private pool or garden pool party.
• Four to six weeks if you are booking a leisure centre or a pool slot, which go early in summer.
• Ask for replies a week before — many venues need final numbers for supervision ratios.
• Confirm the day before if the weather is uncertain and the pool is outdoors.
