What to include

Parents are quietly weighing up five things. Answer them up front.

• Drop-off or stay? The first question every parent has, and the one they feel awkward asking.
• A start and end time. Two hours is plenty for younger children; open-ended invitations make parents hesitate.
• Which children are invited — one child, or siblings too. Say it kindly and clearly.
• Food. Whether you are giving them lunch, a snack, or nothing, so parents can plan and mention allergies.
• Where they will be playing — garden, park, indoors — so children arrive in the right shoes and coat.

When to send

Playdates are the most casual thing you will ever send an invitation for, and they still benefit from a little notice.

• Three days to a week ahead is the sweet spot for a weekend playdate.
• Ask for a reply the day before, mostly so you know how much snack to put out.
• For a group playdate, give a full week — you are competing with swimming lessons and birthday parties.

Wording you can borrow

Friendly and brief. Nobody wants a formal invitation to a Tuesday afternoon.
